FDA Issues Warnings for Biphosphonates

The FDA is reminding prescibers and patients that certain osteoporosis medications may be associated with severe or incapacitating bone, joint and muscle pain. FDA advises that these side effects may develop days, months or even years after starting the drug and may persist despite stopping the medication.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) monitors side effects of drugs that are currently on the market by way of a program known as MedWatch Prescribers provide voluntary reports to the FDA advising them of issues with various prescription drugs and devices. If there are, what FDA considers, a substantial number of reports an action may be taken. On January 7 the FDA issued an Alert to health care providers and patients concerning biphosphonates, a class of prescription medications used to treat osteoporosis and certain other conditions. These drugs are marketed as Actonel, Actonel+Ca, Aredia, Boniva, Didronel, Fosamax, Fosamax+D, Reclast, Skelid, and Zometa.

FDA is reminding prescibers and patients that these drugs may be associated with severe or incapacitating bone, joint and muscle pain. FDA advises that these side effects may develop days, months or even years after starting the drug. Risk factors for development of these side effects is unknown and the frequency with which they might occur is unclear. Although these are known side effects FDA is concerned that they might be overlooked or attributed to another disease causing a delay in diagnosis. Diagnostic delays might lead to prolonged pain requiring additional medications. Of course, any time additional medications are used, the risk for more side effects or adverse reactions occurs. Diagnostic delays might also cause functional impairment involving the ability to work or engage in other activities of daily living.

Some patients have reported prompt resolution of the pain after stopping the medication but other reports suggest that there may be only a partial recovery, even after halting the drug.

It is important for patients to maintain ongoing communication with their physician. If you develop any new symptoms or if you fail to improve with treatment be sure to contact your doctor promptly. You must act as your own advocate. Do not be put off by abrupt, rude or busy office staff. It is important for your concerns to be heard and acted on. If you believe your healthcare provider is not responding to you in an appropriate or timely fashion a second opinion or a visit to the emergency room is in order.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Staff Writer

Winter Construction Safety

Winter is a hard time for outdoor work. The many hazards of a construction site increase 10 fold in the winter.
Medical Malpractice - Guiliani's Recent Comments

Recently at one of his rallies presidential candidate Rudy Guiliani was quoted as saying that her refers to attorneys that sue doctors as "the pig factor." This is an interesting comment as it infers that all malpractice lawsuits are without merit which cannot be further from the truth. We all want to limit frivilous lawsuits however using propaganda against all lawyers is not the proper method as injured people must be able to have an avenue to recover for lost wages and medical expenses caused by the negligence of physicians.

As Mr. Guiliani was mayor of NYC I am suprised by his comments and he must simply be trying to be more appealing to the conservative base. I say this because New York unlike numerous other states has safeguards in place to protect doctors from frivilous lawsuits. In fact, I think if you do a web search of malpractice verdicts you would find that the ones that shock your conscience would be from other states.

We as a law firm only litigate those cases that have merit and prior to instituting a claim in New York a lawyer must get an opinion from a physician indicating that malpractice has occurred. Therefore, although Mr. Guiliani wants to be elected he should be more careful in his representations to the electorate.

For more information on this subject, please refer to the section on Medical Malpractice and Negligent Care.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Rob Quattrocci

Car Accidents - Syracuse

Downtown Syracuse can be dangerous for both pedestrians and drivers. The roads have restrictions regarding left hand turns however that does not stop motorists. These motorists present a danger to pedestrians who would not expect a car to make an illegal left hand turn and drivers alike. In addition, particularly during the work day traffic tendas to be heavy in the downtown area and this congestion leads to additonal accidents.

One such accident occurred this morning during rush hour traffic in downtown syracuse sending multiple people to the hospital.

For more information on this subject matter, please refer to the section on Car and Motorcycle Accidents.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Rob Quattrocci

Medical Mistakes.

The fact that doctors do not want to report medical mistakesWASHINGTON (Reuters) - Nearly half of all U.S. doctors fail to report incompetent or unethical colleagues, even though they agree that such mistakes should be reported, researchers said on Monday.does not come as a shock to those involved in medical malpractice work. What this demonstrates is that medical malpractice law suits are just the tip of the iceberg. If the heath care industries and physicians get there way and eliminate malpractice suits no one will be watching the shop. What would doctors and hospitals report if there was no penalty? Clearly no one is watching except for the lawyers.

For more information on this subject, please refer to the section on Medical Malpractice and Negligent Care.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Joe Stanley

The subprime mess show to what extremes the financial institutions will go to protect the bottom line.In what could be a a key ruling for those of us hoping to learn more about shady subprime lending practices, a bankruptcy judge has given New Century Financial until February 6 to turn over a report of an investigation into the firm's cash handling practices to bankruptcy monitors..This is an example of how things work. This mentality also effects people who are injured in crashes or by any someones negligence. The people with the money will go to any ends not to pay a fair amount on claims. Everyone should be aware of these facts.

For more information on this subject, please refer to the section on Car and Motorcycle Accidents.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Joe Stanley

Roofing Injuries - Workers Compensation/Labor Law

Construction Safety

Yesterdays roofer death shows how dangerous construction can be.<a href="A roofing contractor died this morning after losing his footing on a second-story roof and falling to a brick patio below."Accidents like this are all too frequent and demonstrate the need for construction safety laws. There has been considerable discussion about changing and eliminating many laws on the books to protect workers. Anyone involved in construction should actively insist worker safety laws are not changed. these laws protect injured workers on a construction project and allow them to sue over unsafe conditions.

For more information on this subject, please refer to the section on Worksite Injuries and Workers Compensation.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Joe Stanley
